The most widely used refrigerants till recently were a group of halogenated hydrocarbons, marketed under various proprietary names of Freon, Genetron, Arcton, Isotron,. Frigen etc. These are either methane -based or ethane - based where the hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine and chlorine atoms.

Other fluids are used as refrigerants are Sulphur dioxide, methyl chloride, ethyl chloride, hydrocarbons like propane, butane , ethane, ethylene, etc., carbon dioxide , air and water.
