Rotary Compressors are used where large quantities of air or gas are needed at relatively low pressure. They may be classified into two main types :
1. Displacement compressors in which air is compressed by being trapped in the reducing space formed by two sets of engaging surfaces.
*Rotary positive displacement machines are generally uncooled and the compression is largely adiabatic.
These are two types :
Roots blower and
2. Steady - flow compressors in which compression occurs by transfer of kinetic energy from rotor.
*Steady - flow compressors are of two types :
Centrifugal compressor
Axial compressor
